Galaxy Digital Contains Isolated Testnet Breach — No Client Funds at Risk, Loss < $10K
Galaxy Digital confirms testnet breach; client assets untouched
Galaxy Digital, the crypto financial services firm led by Mike Novogratz, said it contained a cybersecurity incident after unauthorized access to an isolated development workspace used for testing. The company described the impact as immaterial: a person familiar with the matter told reporters the loss was under $10,000 and came from company funds set aside for tests.
Galaxy stressed the compromised environment was a standalone R&D/testnet workspace and not linked to its production systems, trading platforms, custody services or client accounts. According to a company spokesperson, the intrusion was detected quickly, the workspace was secured, and additional safeguards were deployed across its on-chain infrastructure. “No client funds or client account information were accessed or at risk at any point based on our review to date,” Galaxy said, adding that all platforms and services remain fully operational.
While this event had limited financial impact, it underscores a continuing vulnerability across the crypto ecosystem. Open-source code, sizable on-chain liquidity pools and uneven security practices continue to make DeFi, exchanges and infrastructure attractive targets. Industry tallies show billions lost annually to smart contract exploits, phishing and infrastructure breaches—recent estimates frequently range in the $1–2 billion per year area.
Even when breaches are contained without client harm, firms can face reputational damage, regulatory attention and renewed scrutiny of operational practices. For Galaxy—a diversified digital-asset firm that offers institutional trading, asset management, lending, advisory and custody services, and also runs mining, staking and data-center operations—the incident is a reminder of the need for strong segmentation between experimental environments and live infrastructure.
Galaxy said it is continuing its internal review and will provide updates as appropriate.
